What to Watch for: Kid Cudi

Hail to the chiefer
After the release of his 2012 rock album WZRD, it appeared as if Kid Cudi had gone over the edge and would never come back. In many instances you see musicians lose a substantial amount of fans due to conformity to popular music that dominates the general culture ("selling out"). Cudi seemed to do the opposite; he managed to make a record so far from what die-hard as well as casual fans of his were used to hearing, that he seemed to lose all relevance within the music sphere. Cudi has always been about being unique and innovative, but with WZRD he took his music to a whole new level that many of his fans just could not digest. Even I, a dedicated fan, did not even bother downloading the psychedelic/grunge inspired project. The Kid claimed that he experienced prolonged writher's block while working on the album due to his withdrawal from marijuana. Now I'm not going to go off and endorse any drug usage here, but I think that certainly lead him in the wrong direction musically. Cudi is commonly known as 'The Lonely Stoner', whose tracks are laden with lyrics mentioning the recreational use of weed. Fortunately things seem to be clearing up (or getting hazier :)) for the Cleveland hip-hop hero. Numerous Kid Cudi singles have been released officially and unofficially since the WZRD tragedy of last February which, in my opinion, have all shown great stylistic improvement. So does the return of Cudi also signify the rapper's return to the reefer? All evidence suggests so. The Kid stated over the summer that,  "My new album is entitled Indicud (get it, like indica), it will be my version of [Dr. Dre's] The Chronic 2001..." Even the words "I need to smoke" are echoed in the chorus of his recent single "Just What I Am." If Kid Cudi's forthcoming album builds upon this stylistic revival, then expect nothing but the best Cudi compilation to date. Indicud, which is set to be released some time this year, is said to be a double-disc album featuring guest appearances by Ratatat, Kendrick Lamar, and 50 Cent, among others. To say the least, I'm extremely excited, especially from all the buzz Cudi has been creating on his Facebook page. To put things in perspective, The Kid really has nowhere to go but up, so prepare for another monumental landing from the Moon Man.
