New and Noteworthy: Danny!- Payback (Album)

His name is Danny!--and yes you must include the exclamation mark. Otherwise, this South Carolina rapper might call you out for it. Danny's (real name Danny Swain) most recent album Payback (released 9/25/12)  lets his frusturation show in multiple areas besides just the title. At the beginning of the Biggie Smalls track "Kick in the Door" there is a brief skit featuring the "Mad Rapper" on a local radio show. Angered by his lack of commercial success, this fictional persona goes off about how Biggie is making millions after only a debut album. Well to put things in perspective here, Payback Danny's 6th studio album, and I'm guessing not many of you have even heard of him. Danny's angst is clearly evident on multiple tracks on the album, most notably the 10-minute vent "Do it all Over Again." He also fires shots at Childish Gambino, Wiz Khalifa, and Big K.R.I.T. Putting aside all of the bitter sentiment though, I can honestly say that Danny! may be one of the most under-appreciated rappers of this past decade--and perhaps beyond. Swift, dark, and socially conscious lyricism juxtaposes itself over upbeat, old-school samples, making Danny! a breath of fresh air from all that's clogging the rap game today. Take a listen not only to Payback, but to his past works as well to see what I mean.
