What's on my Playlist: Alvin Risk
Over the past few years, the dubstep scene has blown up like crazy. And while many of you may be tempted to go out and listen to any old dubstep remix of that popular song you know and love, I'm a little bit more picky at this point. Enter Alvin Risk, an American producer whose sound is most comparable to that guy named Sonny Moore. Alvin is not for those who like a slow and wobbly bass; his beats are forceful, his synths fire like fully-automatic laser guns, and the pace of his music can switch at multiple times throughout the given track. Alluding to what I said before, what got me hooked on Alvin were his various remixes (and no I am not a hypocrite for saying that), most notably his remix of Ali Love's "Diminishing Returns". I think what makes Alvin's dubstep stand out from the rest of the pack is his mastery of that sought-after drop. Like a roller coaster, he sends you slowly up the track, and when it seems to be moving like a snail at the apex, down you plunge into a barrage of ear-piercing wails, screeches, and booming bass cannons. Alvin works outside of the confines of womp as well, as is exhibited on tracks such as "Infinity." No matter what the BPM of his work my be though, Alvin is sure to deliver a unique listening experience that brings together many aspects of EDM. His first official release, Infinity EP, is available on iTunes.
