Moose Blood - "Blush" (album)
A bit late, but I want to talk about this new Moose Blood album. Moose Blood have been on the scene for only a few years now but seemed to fully realize their sound right from the get go. Citing emo poster boys Brand New as their biggest influence, they make music that overflows with all sorts of feelings. The sound on this record and their others, for the most part, falls in line with Deja Entendu.
Each track on Blush possesses an unavoidable catchiness that inevitably makes its way into your head and your heart. Eddy Bowerton's vocals and guitar perfectly compliment each other but also go against each other in the subtlest of ways. The melodic product is always a warm one, whether it's very sraighforward and upbeat like on "Honey" or raw and dissonant like on "Shimmer." These are songs that will be there for you when you need them most, with love, loss, and hope being dominant themes. These are cliches that can be expected (albeit with open arms) within this type of music, but there's something about the way Moose Blood use them that just feels more natural and honest than other bands. Even Eddy is aware of his melancholy tendencies; "I guess it's time to write another one about being drunk, and I just sit outside with a smoke on," he sings on "Sway." Maybe it's his thick British accent that's key. Maybe it's the slight buzz and reverb of the guitar tones. Whatever it is, it works.
