Flagland

Combining the simple but infectious rhythms of Parquet Courts with the heart-on-sleeve lyricism of The Violent Femmes, New York's Flagland record whatever the hell they feel like, and that's awesome. Guitarist/vocalist Kerry Kallberg's lyrics express anger, self-loathing, and carefreeness. Many of the themes are dark, such as domestic violence on "Monster," and addiction on "I Need It." But then again, much of their music's despondency is disguised as peppy garage punk. At the end of the day Flagland are just keeping it real and making honest and passionate music.
