What's on My Playlist: Munchi

With the EDM movement in its prime, it's hard not to hear the 808 influences in everyday life, from pop radio to Microsoft commercials. It's amazing to see so many people being exposed to types of music that were on the fringes just a decade ago. Perhaps the greatest part, however, is that electronic music serves as a welcoming outlet for today's "fringe" artists who have spectacular talent and the potential to be tomorrow's most influential frontrunners. One of these artists that I've been keeping up with for some time now is Munchi. Hailing from Rotterdam, The Netherlands, Munchi blends traditional Dominican and Latin-American dance music (Munchi is of Dominican descent) with EDM sub genres such as moombahton and trap. He is currently signed to Diplo's label Mad Decent, and as many already know, Diplo is well known for discovering and producing sounds that are wildly unique. Munchi is certainly no exception. Typically experimenting with reggeaton-based sounds, Munchi adds his own exotic spin to Latin club rhythms by infusing them with an array of sirens and other minimal synths. A whirlwind of glitchy Spanish vocal samples, blaring hip-hop horns, and bubbly electro-flare make Munchi's music unpredictable, energetic, and of course, danceable. While Munchi has not quite broken into the mainstream, he is always hard at work, and his extensive catalogue of remixes and original material can be found on his Soundcloud page. I think what sets Munchi apart from other producers is his multicultural approach to his music, and his ability to use that to gain the attention of a wide variety of fans and music moguls alike. Instead of straying from his roots, he incorporates them into everything he creates, which gives him a signature sound that ceases to repeat itself.
