Insomniac
Wow what a find! Minnesota's Insomniac have pretty much everything you want from a pop punk band. Their lyrics are real and relatable, the band isn't overproduced and generic-sounding (think Spraynard), and they even sound kinda old school (think Saves the Day on poppier tracks, Finch on heavier tracks). Just when you thought you've heard enough of them, they come through with a track that is unique in structure/lyrics/performance. "Just Girly Things" is the one that stands out to me in this regard. Even their softer/acoustic tracks remind me of early Brand New. Really all of their songs are great, and they're all FREE too. How did I find out about this band? Well, their lead singer Verrick does vocals for Jarrod Alonge's parody band Sunrise Skater Kids (hilarious dude btw check em out). When I thought about what this band would be like after considering that role, I was skeptical. But damn these guys are a truly talented band who are clearly very educated in the genre they play. Sadness, familiar ascending riffs, chugs, gang vocals, screams, high school references...IT'S ALL THERE! Oh, and be sure to check out the hilariously titled split they're on (with Pets With People Names) called "The Pop Punkin Spice Latte EP."
