What to Watch For: Myrkur

Denmark-based Myrkur makes music by herself and for herself, but the result is far from amateur. "I always dreamed of becoming a valkyrie", she says1. In Norse mythology, valkyries would choose who would die in battle. Myrkur's abrupt and chilling screams certainly possess a similar commanding quality, one akin to the cry of a raven signaling death. When mixed with airy, choral vocals and chugging guitar riffs, Myrkur creates intricate soundscapes that feel mystically organic. Never before have I heard a single musician be able to blend so many complex sounds and mold them into a beautifully brutal masterpiece like Myrkur can. Her song "Nattens Barn" has it all: uplifting chants, gutteral shrieks, deep, pounding drums, and bone-chilling guitar chords that echo throughout frostbitten fjords. Get excited for this fresh and promising female virtuoso to take the black metal world by snowstorm.  Her self-titled debut album is set to release September 16 via Relapse Records.
